Songs Happen

I couldn't resist posting this, though this might not be the finished wording. The Aeslin mice are featured in Discount Armageddon (though in fairness they are minor characters.)  The chorus is a reference to the Billy Collins poem The Country (the poet reads it, illustrated, here)

Aeslin Mice (first draft)
lyrics and melody by Catherine Faber 2012
a capella mp3 here

Talking rodents in tribal dress,
Glad to quit the wonders of the wilderness,
Converted, and converting, with love and wit
Family history to Holy Writ

   Mark their rituals, but my advice
   Don't give matches to the Aeslin mice!

Food For Privacy: the first swap made;
The Oldest Ritual, the Sacred Trade,
Curious ever, but make no mistake;
They're always ready for cheese and cake.

They've never seen the old events for which
Their festive cheering reaches fever pitch,
But they keep our history in tale and song;
The colony's memory is very long.

Food and worship is their whole desire,
Singing praises in a tiny choir,
Held in harmony, sweet and shrill
Too mad to manage and to cute to kill.

Every Price is given this much free,
Our peculiar immortality
In the memories the mice rehearse
We live forever, though we're dead, or worse.

Thank you, The mice are so far lovely, only on page 25 but I hope to improve on that before I turn the light out.
I hope you enjoy the book as much as I have.
I just finished reading this, so I was very happy to see music for it! :)
:-) Glad to please. I had fun writing it.
Now I'm looking forward to reading this even more!
Available now at a bookstore near you!

I thought it was a lot of fun; I hope you enjoy it too.

That was awesome. Mind if I add it to my playlist? zyphax at gmail dot com
I don't mind. You should be able to download it from the link above. Feel free to pass it to others as long as you attribute it properly.
:-) I am thrilled that people like it.
:-) you are very welcome.
HAIL!
You know, I totally thought about adding an extra track to it that was me shouting "Hail" raised an octave and cloned to sound like lots of mice. But I was kind of in a hurry.

I'm glad you like it :-)
HAIL! (that was awesome! :-)
(blush) Thank you. I'm glad you like it.
Thank you! Having devoured the book entirely too quickly, I really enjoyed this! :o)
I am very glad you liked it.

Is that a wallaby in your icon?
Nope - a smallish kangaroo. Although we fed some wallabies, I didn't get to pet any. One of my other avatars is me and my husband, sitting on a camel. Lots of strange critters in Australia. Never having lived anywhere with large flocks of brightly-colored birds, that was possibly the most startling thing about the trip... flocks of greedy, demanding, pink-breasted cockatoos ("galahs"). The locals look on them as a nuisance, like pigeons here -
calling them "flying rats".
That sounds like an amazing trip. I'd like to go someday.
Oh, that's just wonderful!
:-) Thank you.
Lovely! I've been an Aeslyn mice fan for years :)
I'm glad you like it.

So, did you read this for Seannan before she sent it off to the publisher or something? Because the book only came out a few days ago, and yes, Seannan mentioned the Aeslin mice on her LJ, but I think that was last month, so I don't see how you could have known about them for years unless there's some pre-DA short story that has been publicly available for that long (in which case gimme, pretty please?)
There were a bunch of Alice & Thomas stories that included the mice a long time ago; I just checked my file dates, and my 'Healy mice" icons all date from 2006, so it's been 6 years since the first time I read about them... wow, lol. I just spent half an hour trying to figure out what tags she might have them under and failing utterly; I guess maybe ask her what tag she put them under?
I see. I never read these stories; I will have to try to track them down. Thank you for telling me about them.
They may've been rough ideas or first drafts. If she's taken the series in new directions, those stories may well be locked away.
That's certainly possible. I won't worry too much if I can't find them.
Awesome song, well sung!
Thank you; I am very pleased you liked it!
